Police have arrested two men in connection with the murder of a 32-year-old man who died after being assaulted during a row at a petrol station.

Colin Stewart had been on a life support machine since suffering a blood clot after the dispute at the Esso Petrol Station in Franklyn Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, late on Saturday.

It is thought he had been punched in the head and then collapsed on his doorstep about an hour-and-a-half later.

Surgeons had removed the clot from Mr Stewart's brain and his condition was described as critical but on Wednesday police said he had died.

'Silly little argument'

Sussex Police said on Wednesday evening two men had been arrested in connection with Mr Stewart's murder.

A police spokesman said: "The incident has now become a murder inquiry and the general appeal for witnesses remains in place even though some witnesses have come forward."

Mr Stewart's family had also made an appeal for witnesses to the incident to contact police.

His brother, Davey Stewart, 35, said: "It started as a silly little argument in a petrol station to do with queue jumping."

Colin Stewart was with his brother in a white Metro when they drove into the garage just after midnight on Saturday, police said.

It appears one of two men from a van which was also parked at the garage accused Colin Stewart of jumping the queue in the shop.

The dispute continued on the forecourt and turned into a fight which was broken up by Davey Stewart.

The two brothers went home but Colin Stewart was found by a neighbour collapsed outside his front door at 0130 BST.

He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath where surgeons performed an emergency operation.

Detectives still want to speak to anyone who was in the petrol station at the time of the attack, in particular a young woman in a dark t-shirt who was in the shop.
