Shock at swim boy's death
Education officials have sent condolences to the family of an 11-year-old boy from Alderney who died during a school swimming lesson.

Callum Gillan, from St Anne's School, collapsed during a swimming lesson on Tuesday afternoon.

He was taken to hospital where he later died. A post mortem will be held on Wednesday.

Deputy Martin Ozanne, President of the Bailiwick's Education Council, said the whole community was shocked by the boy's death and sent his sympathy to the family.

Mr Ozanne said: "It's very sad. The education service is deeply shocked by this."

'Correct actions'

A team of counsellors had been sent to Alderney to help staff and children come to terms with the loss.

He said investigations into the incident would start later this week and would look at safety and staffing at the school.

He said: "I believe that the actions we took were the correct actions and we had the right staff on duty at the time and that everything was done to try to save this young boy's life."

Kevin Everett, headteacher of St Anne's, said staff and pupils were shocked and saddened by the incident.
