Police in Merseyside are hunting a gang after a man was hit in the neck with a broken bottle in the street.
As the victim lay on the ground in New Brighton, early on Saturday morning, one of the men also tried to rob him.
He was attacked after a gang of six or seven men challenged him for money, in Victoria Road at about 0500 BST.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said he was attacked when he refused to hand anything over.
Witness appeal
He said: "One of the men then struck him in the face with a broken bottle, causing a severe cut to his neck.
"After the man fell to the floor the attacker searched his pockets, but found nothing to steal."
Paramedics later took the victim to Arrowe Park Hospital, where his condition was described as "stable" on Sunday.
The man who attacked him was white, 6ft tall and over average build. He was wearing a dark blue baseball cap.
Witnesses have been asked to contact police at Birkenhead.
