Driver 'critical' after crash

A driver is in a critical condition in hospital in Lancashire after his car crashed on the M61 motorway.

The 26-year-old's sports car rolled down a grass embankment in the accident in the early hours of Sunday.

Firefighters had to cut the man free from the wreckage of the car.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, at about 0100 BST.

Driver unidentified

Lancashire police said the Fiat coupe left the northbound carriageway of the motorway after travelling round a bend.

A spokesman said the accident happened close to the junction between the M61 and M6 motorways, near Preston.

He said: "The man's car left the carriageway on the nearside, having just negotiated a right-hand bend.

"It travelled up a grass bank before rolling over several times.

"Firefighters who attended the scene had to cut the driver free from the wreckage."

The driver, who has not been identified, is from the Preston area.

He is currently being treated at the Preston Royal Hospital.
