Police have warned fans not to try and take stadium mementoes

Police mounted a major operation to patrol Manchester City's final game at its Maine Road home.

The team brought 80 years of history at the stadium to a close on Sunday.

Their game against Southampton was the last before the squad moves to the City of Manchester Stadium next season.

Fans had been warned they faced arrest if they tried to take any mementoes from the ground at the end of the match.

Extra police resources were deployed inside and outside the ground.

'Significant' match

Greater Manchester Police's helicopter also patrolled the skies above the Moss Side ground.

Mounted police and crowd control units were drafted in to the operation.

Superintendent Neil Wain had warned troublemakers in and outside the stadium that they will be arrested.

He said: "We appreciate the significance of the match for hundreds of fans and we don't want that to be spoiled by a minority."
