Disappointment over death appeal
Hywel Llywelyn Hughes

Detectives say they are disappointed by the response to a renewed appeal for information about the movements of a 32-year-man who died in police custody.

Hywel Llywelyn Hughes was on a night out in Bangor on Friday, 2 May, when he was arrested and taken into custody after being thrown out of a night club.

He later collapsed at Caernarfon police station and died at Ysbyty Gwynedd the following day.

Two men were later arrested and bailed on suspicion of manslaughter.

Teams of police, both uniformed and in plain clothes, returned to the Joop club in Bangor on Friday night, to try to gain information from club-goers on the events of the previous week.

A police spokesman said they made some headway by talking to customers in the club.

But despite receiving several calls concerning the incident, the investigation team says it still needs more vital information to pinpoint Mr Hughes' movements during the night he was thrown out of the club.

Emergency resuscitation

North Wales Police are anxious to hear from anyone who saw Mr Hughes between 1600 BST on Friday, 2 May and 2200 BST, when he arrived at the club.

They also want anyone who saw him inside the club or when he was ejected at about 2310 BST to contact them, as well as anyone who saw the police Ford Focus taking him into custody.

The vehicle had stopped en route to Caernarfon near Bangor retail park at about 2318 BST so a police sergeant and woman officer could attend to him.

The journey resumed at about 2340 BST and on arrival at Caernarfon custody suite Mr Hughes was given emergency resuscitation treatment after officers noticed he was unwell.

An ambulance took him to Ysbyty Gwynedd, where he died at 1930 BST on Saturday.

A post mortem by a Home Office pathologist revealed that Mr Hughes died from traumatic asphyxia.

The Police Complaints Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.

North Wales Police would like anyone with information to contact them on 0845 6071001 or 0845 6071002.
