Lucky escape as lorry hits house
Cottage in Calstock
The lorry left a large crack in the wall of the cottage

A Cornish couple has a lucky escape when a lorry crashed into their cottage.

The accident happened on Saturday morning when the lorry, which was delivering fruit and vegetables, wedged itself into the corner of the 150-year old cottage in the village of Calstock.

It has now been removed but it has left a large crack in the wall, a small section of which has been dislodged.

The couple say large vehicles should be banned from the narrow streets of villages.

The streets just aren't built for that size of lorry
John Hawkins

Ali Hawkins, who lives in the cottage with her husband John, said: "I was woken up by an incredible rumbling and crashing and knew immediately that something had hit the house.

"I leapt out of bed and found the lorry stuck in the corner of the house.

"I think we have been quite lucky."

Mr Hawkins said that large lorries should not be allowed to drive into small villages.

"I feel very sorry for the drivers of big lorries that get sent into the village, it is absolutely ridiculous.

"The streets just aren't built for that size of lorry and accidents will happen when they send big lorries through narrow lanes."
