Racing sequel too fast for Matrix
2 Fast 2 Furious
The film stars a group of unknowns
Street racing sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious has knocked The Matrix Reloaded from the top of the UK box office chart after five weeks at the summit.

The high-speed action film took £2.7m at the box office over the weekend, while The Matrix sequel could only manage £644,000.

2 Fast 2 Furious is the follow up to The Fast and the Furious, a surprise box office hit in 2001.

The sequel, which again features a relatively low-profile cast, is about an undercover cop who has to infiltrate an illegal racing gang in Miami.

The original film took more than $150m (£89m) world-wide while the sequel has so far taken almost $90m (£53m).

Military thriller Basic, starring John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson, is the only other new entry in the top 10, taking the sixth position and earning almost £250,000.

After the Matrix in second spot is thriler Identity in third, with comedies Anger Management and Dumb and Dumberer filling out the top five.

Just outside the top 10 is X-Men 2, which has been in the chart for two months and has earned £20m in the UK, and comedy Johnny English, which has earned £19m in 11 weeks.
