Police have launched an appeal for information

The death of a middle-aged man in Port Glasgow is being treated as murder by police.

His body was found in a close in Robert Street in the Inverclyde town at about 2020 BST on Friday.

Strathclyde Police appealed for two men seen in the area to come forward as the force launched a plea for witnesses.

The 52-year-old man, who has not been identified, had suffered head injuries and stab wounds.

Detective Chief Inspector Edward McCusker said: "I am appealing to anyone who was in Robert Street yesterday evening and who witnessed anything untoward or who may have any relevant information to contact Greenock Police Office.

"In particular, I would like to speak to two men, believed to be in their 50s, who were seen in the area around the time the unidentified man was discovered."

Detectives said they were treating the death as murder following a post mortem examination.
