A man and his wife have been injured in an attack outside their County Antrim home.

Jim Guy, a fireman, his wife and two children were asleep when their Newtownabbey home's alarm went off at about 0130 BST on Saturday.

When Mr Guy went outside to investigate he was attacked.

The men then drove two cars at the couple, one of which was the family car.

Mr Guy sustained head and leg injuries and his wife was treated for injuries to her body and leg.

The couple and their two children, a 16-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl who were both in the house at the time, were left severely shocked following the attack.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

"It was a very serious incident which had potentially fatal consequences for those involved," said police inspector Muir Clark.

"We are very shocked at this event and obviously the severe effect it has had on the family. It was a very scary experience for them."
