Two killed by 'angry fan' driver
Paul Taylor

A man who killed a father and son while driving home in a rage after seeing his football team lose has been jailed for six years.

Paul Taylor, 41, overtook Philip Cartwright and his family in their Audi, forcing an oncoming Land Rover to swerve and smash into the family's car.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Taylor was incensed after watching Manchester United lose to Middlesbrough at Old Trafford in March last year.

The judge told him he had brutally destroyed two lives.

It was also revealed Taylor had more than 100 previous convictions for car theft, burglary and violence.

The court heard he was still angry as he tried to overtake a line of traffic on the A623 near Tideswell in Derbyshire.

The Land Rover was forced to swerve and hit the Audi driven by 50-year-old Mr Cartwright, who was killed along with his 12-year-old son Robert.

Pat Cartwright, 51, survived after being treated in intensive care and her daughter Sarah, 18, escaped with only cuts and bruises.

Sarah Cartwright, from Bakewell, Derbyshire, said after the sentence: "He is going to jail but me and my mother have actually lost my father and brother.

"His family will be able to talk to him on the phone but we will not be able to talk to our loved ones again. It's a life sentence."

Taylor, of Tissington Close, Holme Hall, near Chesterfield, had denied causing the deaths of Philip and Robert Cartwright by dangerous driving, but changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial.

He was also banned from driving for life.
