Toddler saved from fire threat

A toddler and a dog have been rescued after a man poured petrol over the car they were in and threatened to set it alight.

The man had stopped the Rover 220 in the middle of Shanklin High Street on the Isle of Wight.

A passer-by intervened and pulled the two-year-old boy and dog to safety.

Emergency services were called and a 46-year-old man from Kent was detained at a psychiatric unit on the island under the Mental Health Act.

After being rescued, the young boy was reunited with his mother.

Following the incident, the road was closed for more than three hours while firefighters made the area safe and removed the red, s-registration vehicle.
