Suicide of man who killed fiancée
Coroner' report
The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide for Maich

A spurned lover murdered his fiancée then jumped in front of a train after discovering she was having an affair with his friend, an inquest heard.

Robert Maich, 42, of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, had left his wife and three children for Kate Shefton-Jenkins, of Wokingham, Berkshire.

A double inquest at Windsor Coroner's Court heard how Mr Maich was living with Ms Shefton-Jenkins when she told him of her affair with David Miller.

He stabbed her in the head with a screwdriver, bathed her and placed her in their bed before driving to Goostrey, Cheshire, and jumping off a bridge in front of a high-speed train, the inquest was told.

Unlawful killing

Mr Maich had left a sobbing message on their answer-phone apologising to her mother Diana.

It said: "I don't know what I have done - I really don't. I'm going to die. I loved her so very much."

Detective Sergeant Mark Etheridge told the inquest: "I am satisfied that Robert killed Kate and then went up north where he killed himself."

Coroner Peter Bedford recorded a verdict of unlawful killing for Ms Shefton-Jenkins and suicide for Mr Maich.
