Test centres safe from closure

Four driving test centres in Shropshire have been saved from closure after scores of complaints from residents and driving instructors.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recently announced it would be carrying out a review which could mean the closure or merging of Shropshire's four test centres.

Driving instructors in the area called a meeting to discuss the issue.

The DSA confirmed this week it will take no further action regarding the test centres in Telford, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch and Oswestry for the present.

Consultation exercise

Charles Morton, area manager of the DSA, said: "Due to the upsurge in the demand for tests and consequential recruitment of examiners, I feel that this review is no longer justifiable and as such I intend to conclude the consultation exercise early."

Shropshire County Council had sent a letter to the DSA opposing the move.

Council leader Roger Walker said he was really pleased the DSA had taken this decision.

"It seems the sensible course of action, I know that everyone who might have been affected will be very relieved."
