Stolen painting back on display
Flight into Egypt by Titian
The painting - worth £6m - dates from the 16th century

A Titian masterpiece stolen from Longleat and missing for eight years has gone back on show.

The painting, Rest on the Flight into Egypt, was taken from the Wiltshire stately home in 1995.

It was found in a carrier bag in London last year after a seven-year hunt.

And now, after months of restoration, the 16th century artwork - valued at £6m - is home again.

Window at Longleat in Wiltshire
Thieves broke in through this first-floor window

Art thieves took just three minutes to take the Titian painting from a stateroom after switching off floodlights and climbing in through a narrow first floor window.

The two-foot-wide painting, bought by the 4th Marquess of Bath in 1978, shows the Virgin Mary cradling Jesus with Joseph looking on.

It was discovered, intact but without its frame, after a seven-year search led by Charles Hill, a former Scotland Yard detective.

A reproduction was put in its place while the painting was missing, but now, with its frame replaced, the original is back on display.
