Young girl aims for the heights

An eight-year-old girl from South Yorkshire is planning to climb the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

Rebecca Shedden will attempt the Three Peaks Challenge later this year, making her the youngest person to take part.

The Hoyland schoolgirl and her father Rob have already conquered Scafell Pike in Cumbria, Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis in Scotland separately.

Now they plan to climb all three, and drive between the mountains, in one day.

Mr Shedden, 37, a computer consultant, said his daughter, who is just under 4ft and wears size three shoes, loves walking and climbing.

He said: "She was just six months when she was in my backpack and I was going up hills.

"She just wants to go up there and has continued to enjoy it."

Rebecca said: "I like climbing because the views are good. I want to be a mountaineer when I grow up. I would like to climb Everest.

"I like the camaraderie and meeting all the different sorts of people. We met a French man at the top of Ben Nevis."
