Police investigating the disappearance of a Middlesbrough prostitute have been granted more time to question a man.

The 57-year-old man was arrested in Sunderland on Thursday morning on suspicion of murder.

He is being questioned in connection with the disappearance of Rachel Wilson.

He was taken to a police station in the Cleveland Police force area for questioning.

Detectives were granted an extension on Friday to question him for a further 12 hours.

Rachel, 19, who lived in Middlesbrough, had turned to prostitution to feed a heroin addict.

She has not been seen for nearly a year.

The last sighting of her was on Middlesbrough's Southfield Road, in the early hours of 31 May, 2002.

A team of detectives has been working on the case since Rachel vanished and hundreds of posters were put up around the town.
