Second motorcyclist killed
Scene of accident on the A38
The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene

A man has died in an accident on the A38 Devon Expressway.

It is the second fatality on the road in 24 hours.

The Exeter-bound carriageway near the Deep Lane turn-off between Plympton and Ivybridge was completely closed for six hours, but has now reopened.

A motorcycle and a white arctic Mercedes goods lorry were involved in the accident which occurred at 0500 BST after a deer strayed onto the road.

The motorcyclist, aged 52 and from Plympton, was declared dead at the scene.

A mile-long diversion for motorists is in place, but massive tailbacks have built up.

Critically injured

Police believe the deer ran out in front of the motorcyclist before being struck by the lorry.

Officers say the road will remain closed while accident investigators carry out their work.

On Thursday afternoon, a motorcyclist was killed and another man left critically injured after a serious accident on the westbound A38 at Bittaford, near Ivybridge.

The Expressway was closed in both directions to allow the Devon Air Ambulance to transport the injured man to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Police believe the motorcyclist was in collision with a bronze Rover 820 and its driver, who had left the vehicle after it had broken down.

The identity of the dead man, who is 22 years old and from Hampshire, is not being released until relatives have been contacted.

The 23-year-old male car driver, from Plymouth, is in a stable condition in hospital after undergoing major surgery.
