He said that the lessons helped him to cope with the difficulties of being a carer.

"It was very hard for me to relax because I was caring for my wife," said Mr Humphreys.

"So I took up some computer classes as a way of relaxing and I really enjoyed it.

"I have always been of the opinion that an active mind makes getting old easier to bear.

"When you get old you get all sorts of aches and pains, but the mind is very important and if you want to enjoy old age, like I do, you have got to have a bright and shiny mind.

"You must keep the mind active," he said.

"I never imagined that something I did for relaxation would lead to this award.

"I am going to keep on learning new things and hope to learn Spanish.

"I have cousins who are Spanish nationals, and it is my intention to learn their language so that I can converse on an equal footing.

"I also intend to continue learning about the workings of computer packages," he added.
