Head charged over 'slap' claim

A head teacher has been charged with assault after a complaint that she hit an unruly pupil.

Pam Mitchelhill, of Crocketts Lane Primary School in Smethwick, West Midlands, allegedly slapped a six-year-old girl in the face.

Mrs Mitchelhill, 50, who denies the claim, has been suspended by the local authority - Sandwell - while investigations are carried out.

The NASUWT teaching union, of which she is a member, is backing her case.

'Beacon' status

Crocketts Lane gained "beacon" status last year - singling it out as an example to other schools.

It was also named one of the most improved schools in the country, coming within the top 220 of the 3,500 nurseries and primaries inspected by the education watchdog Ofsted.

Mrs Mitchelhill, who has been a teacher for 25 years, was praised for her "strong desire and commitment to raise standards".

Sandwell Councillor Darren Cooper, chairman of governors at Crocketts Lane, said: "I can confirm a member of staff at the school has been suspended.

"This matter is being investigated and the member of staff dealt with according to the appropriate procedures as laid down by the council's employment policies.

"Suspension is the normal procedure under such procedures. It carries no presumption of wrongdoing.

"We cannot comment any further for fear of prejudicing any future decisions."
