Japan 'bomb' photographer fired
Hiroki Gomi (right) after his release with Yoshiaki Ito, deputy manager of the Mainichi newspaper
Gomi and his newspaper apologised to victims' families
A Japanese newspaper has sacked one of its photographers for trying to bring home, as a souvenir, an explosive device he found in Iraq.

The device - from a cluster bomb -- exploded in his luggage as it was being examined at Amman airport, in Jordan.

One security guard was killed and several other people injured.

The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper said the photographer, Hiroki Gomi, had damaged their reputation.

Mr Gomi said he would regret what he had done for the rest of his life.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison in Jordan, but returned home to Japan earlier this month after being pardoned.
