An elderly couple died instantly when their car veered off a motorway and overturned in a field on Good Friday.
The accident happened when the husband, who was at the wheel of a the estate car, lost control in the fast lane of the A1(M) near Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
The car careered down the grass bank at Junction 7 northbound before flipping over, trapping the occupants.
A passing off-duty doctor who saw the crash tried unsuccessfully to revive the couple who were both pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Ambulance service said: "This was a tragic start to the Bank Holiday weekend.

"The man and woman sustained multiple injuries and were certified dead at the scene by a passing off-duty doctor, who stopped and tried to help them.
"By the time the two ambulances arrived the couple were both dead."
A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said that both victims were pensioners but would not be identified until relatives had been told of the tragedy.
The accident closed the motorway between Junctions 6 and 7 as accident investigators combed the wreckage and surrounding areas for clues.
