A pub landlord has been attacked with a shotgun during a robbery near Chelmsford.
Two people broke into the Old Kings Head in Stock in the early hours of Monday.
The publican and another member of staff were just preparing to lock up.
The publican was hit on the head with the butt of the gun suffering bruising and leaving him needing hospital treatment.
After failing to tie up the pair, the raiders left empty-handed.
The other staff member was uninjured.
Essex Police described the raid as "brutal and unnecessary" and are appealing for witnesses.
