The pensioner was struck by a bin lorry
A pensioner has died after he was hit by a reversing bin lorry.

The 83-year-old man, who has not been named, was walking behind the council refuse van in the roadway on Glenallan Drive, in Edinburgh.

The vehicle, which was reversing, knocked the man to the ground and he died instantly.

An investigation is under way into the incident which happened about 1100 BST on Thursday.

'Extremely saddened'

A joint probe by the Lothian and Borders Police, Edinburgh City Council and the Health and Safety Executive has been launched.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Councillor Donald Anderson, leader of Edinburgh City Council, said: "Everyone at the council is extremely saddened and concerned by this tragedy.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man and the council staff involved in this accident.

"We are working with all the agencies involved to ascertain the full facts."

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the accident.

"A report of the circumstances will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
