A man whose body was discovered in a flat in Kirkcudbright in south-west Scotland has been revealed as a former loyalist terrorist.

Brian Gamble, 47, was a convicted murderer who settled in the town after being released from jail in Northern Ireland under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

Gamble was convicted in the early 1990s along with another man of torturing their victim, a fellow UVF member, and cutting his throat.

He was freed as part of the peace process in September 1999 and moved to Kirkcudbright.

Last September, a local man was charged with assaulting and attempting to murder him.

Police say Gamble was found dead at his home on Friday.

A post-mortem examination has been held but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

A police guard was maintained at the premises over the weekend and on Monday.
