Police hunt motorist after fatal accident
A man has died after being knocked down by a car in Dalston, near Carlisle.

Police say the motorist failed to stop, and that a car thought to have been involved in the accident was discovered a short time later.

It had been abandoned and also set on fire.

The accident happened just after 2200 BST on Thursday outside the Co-op, in The Square in Dalston.

A cream Ford Fiesta is believed to have hit the 31-year-old local man, who was taken to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, where he died.

Police say another car, an Austin Metro, was also seen driving off with the Ford Fiesta.

Officers investigating the fatal accident say the licence plate of the Ford Fiesta is thought to be F391 HEC.

They also think that the cars might have been seen near the Bridge End Inn in Dalston, shortly before the accident.

The road was closed for five hours and police are appealing for witnesses.
