The Indian state of Tamil Nadu has set up an all-women commando force, drawn from the state police.
The 150 women have been given counter-insurgency and anti-terrorist training.
A BBC correspondent in Madras says the state chief minister, Jayalalitha, has recently been stressing the need to empower women in all fields.
