Officials in Sri Lanka say one man has been killed and more than six others injured in clashes between Muslims and Tamils in the northeastern town of Muttur.
Police have imposed a curfew on the town.
Tension rose in Muttur following the suicide of a Muslim woman in protest at the abduction of her son by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels last month.
Muslims comprise only around eight per cent of Sri Lanka's population, but have a strong presence in the Muttur area.
