Several hundred people in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have appealed to the United Nations secretary general, Kofi Annan, to persuade India to avoid shelling civilian targets along the line of control.
More than 500 people demonstrated in the capital, Muzaffarabad, and handed a memorandum to UN military observers.
India and Pakistan have disputed Kashmir for half a century, but after coming close to war last year, they have ordered the restoration of full diplomatic ties and air links.
