Police hunt unique fireplace
The missing fireplace
A unique antique fireplace, originally made for one of Britain's most famous retailers, has been stolen.

The solid oak piece was constructed for the Nottingham home of Jesse Boot, founder of the Boots company.

Police said the fireplace was taken from a home in the Lenton area of the city after the owner advertised the property for sale with photographs of it.

The piece is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world but police were unable to give an estimate of its value.

Devil carving

Jesse Boot lived in the Wollaton area of the city all his life between 1850 and 1931, and items from his houses later became sought-after pieces.

Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said: "The antique fireplace was among several pieces of furniture taken and it is believed to be the only one of its type in existence and is of considerable value.

"It is described as eight feet wide and six feet high, heavily carved, with two images of standing bears in each bottom corner."

"The item also featured an art nouveau female bust and at its centre, an image of the devil with a three-pointed hat."

Police believe the item was stolen from the collector's home between 2 April and 12 April.
