New schools get go-ahead

The new schools are due to be built by 2004
Two new primary schools are to be built in Cleckheaton and Batley to replace the current ones.

Kirklees Council has given the go-ahead for the project which sees the Whitcliffe Road School, Cleckheaton, relocated to a site at Rawfolds Way.

In Batley, the new £2.5m Carlinghow School will be built on the site of the existing school and will cater for 420 pupils.

The original proposal had been to refurbish both schools but building new ones is now the preferred choice.

State-of-the-art development

Councillor John Smithson said: "Replacement of both of these schools is a much better option.

"It will see modern state-of-the-art schools to provide the very best education setting for young children in these two areas.

"In both cases it will mean that children's education will not be disrupted while the new schools are built."

It is hoped the work will be completed by summer 2004.
