Call for four-wheel drive ban
A four-wheel drive vehicle
Four-wheel drive vehicles are very popular in Guernsey
Four-wheel drive vehicles in Guernsey have come under fire from an environmentalist.

Deputy Anne Robilliard, who chairs the pedestrian safety group STEPS, claimed such vehicles were pointless in a place like Guernsey.

She wants more people who own them to consider using smaller cars instead.

She claimed people owned them less for their practical value and more because they saw them as a status symbol.

"They are totally unnecessary on an island like Guernsey," she said.

"Our main roads are small, we have tiny lanes, and if you are a pedestrian, a cyclist or a mother on foot with children, it can be pretty frightening when these vehicles go past you."

However, she admitted implementing tough, radical measures to get rid of 'four-by-fours' could be difficult.
