Year round twilight shopping kicks off
Betty's Tea Rooms
Betty's will be among the retailers opening late on Thursdays
More than 80 retailers have pledged their support for a new late-night shopping initiative in York.

Previously a Christmas "event", shops, along with food and drink outlets, will now be open every Thursday until 2000 BST/GMT.

The idea is being pushed by the City of York Council, First Stop York Tourism Partnership and the Chamber of Commerce.

Tony Bennett, the council's assistant director said: "It is proving a popular idea among city businesses and we're all hoping it will provide a boost to the economy as well as providing an additional attraction for both residents and tourists."

Easter Fair

Among the retailers who have signed up to the new opening hours are Betty's Tea Rooms, Waterstones, Marks & Spencer, Next, Gap and Monsoon.

Brian Littlejohn, manager of Marks & Spencer, said: "The response and degree of support has been very encouraging and there is a real determination that this will be a great success."

Shoppers and tourists can also enjoy a traditional jazz band and Easter Fair, both in Parliament Street to mark the first extended opening hours on 17 April.

Road calming measures will also be in place, with traffic banned from the city centre and park-and-ride services extended.
