Two people who were being questioned by police in Essex on suspicion of murdering an 18-month-old boy have been released on police bail.

Police were called to Southend General Hospital on Saturday night after Ryan Onley was admitted with serious injuries.

A 20-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, from the Rayleigh area, were arrested.

Medical staff tried to save the toddler, but he died shortly after admission.

A post mortem examination carried out on Tuesday was unable to establish how he died.

Results of toxicology tests are not expected until later this week.

Liaison officers

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We would like to speak to members of the public who may have seen a man and a woman appearing to administer first aid to a baby outside a parade of shops in London Road, Hadleigh earlier on Saturday evening."

Specially-trained liaison officers are working with the family of the baby boy.

The arrested couple have not been named.

They have been bailed to return to a police station on Tuesday.
