Best beaches are given awards

It is hoped more beaches will qualify next year
Thirteen beaches in Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire have been named as among the best the country.

They have all gained Seaside Awards, organised by the charity Environmental Campaigns (ENCAMS).

To receive one of the awards the beaches must have facilities such as showers, first aid and a lifeguard.

Bathing water is also checked before the Seaside Award flag can be flown on the beach.

And dogs must be banned during the summer months.

Next year

The regional director of ENCAMS, Deborah Fox, says the task is now to get more beaches up to standard for next year.

She said: "We have worked hard getting the wheels in motion with other beaches in the region.

"It would be such a boost to the region's tourism if visitors and residents have more of the finest beaches in Britain to visit next year."

Across the UK, 332 beaches are receiving this year's Seaside Awards - an all time record.

The winners in Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire are:

Bridlington North
Bridlington South
Cayton Bay
Cleethorpes Central
Filey
Flamborough South Landing
Robin Hood's Bay
Runswick Bay
Sandsend
Scarborough North Bay
Scarborough South Bay
Staithes
Whitby West Cliff
