Welsh Assembly Elections
The Welsh Assembly building in Cardiff
The assembly building in Cardiff
Elections for the Welsh Assembly and Scottish Parliament take place on 1 May, and on the same day there will be local elections in 10'000 of England's 19'000 council seats.

Critics say Edinburgh and Cardiff have become homes to expensive talking shops but the parties involved say devolution has made a real difference.

  • Breakfast reported live from Cardiff this morning. Bill Turnbull talked to all the main parties, and you can see that discussion by clicking on the link below

You can also see a report from Yvonne Ndege who has been to Newport to look at how devolution has changed people's lives.

  • There are 60 seats in the Welsh Assembly - those elected are known as Assembly Members or AMs.

  • Following the elections on 1 May, the first plenary session will take place on 6 May and the First Minister elected.

  • The first elections took place in 1999, the Labour party won the most seats but no party gained overall control.

  • Even though it is four years since devolution started, little progress has been made in building a new home for the assembly.

  • Some of the measures introduced by the assembly include the scrapping of tests for seven year olds, the abolition of secondary school league tables and the introduction of free school milk for key stage one pupils.
