A pall of thick black smoke from a tyre dump fire in Birdale Field Lane, Collingham, east of Leeds drifted towards the village of Boston Spa and the A1 trunk route on Thursday at 2000 BST.
Residents had been advised to keep all doors and windows closed because of the fumes and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Hospitals pioneer new scheme
Hospitals in Leeds and Bradford are to pioneer a new scheme to make sure surgical instruments are properly de-contaminated.
The scheme is a partnership between the NHS and the private sector, with the first new facility for the Leeds and Bradford Trusts up and running by 2005.
Hunt for missing Husky
Police in Wakefield are searching for a Siberian Husky puppy that has been taken from its Crigglestone home.
The animal was taken from a dog pen within the family's garage either late on Sunday night or early Monday morning.
The young bitch is micro chipped, has a grey coat, a sandy face, one blue eye and one green/brown split.
