George and Laura Bush visited Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in Poland where 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered

The presidential couple prayed before laying a wreath at the Death Wall - where inmates were sprayed with bullets.

They then viewed the gas chambers and crematorium ovens where Jews, Poles, Gypsies and Soviet citizens were murdered.

Mr Bush said the site "was a sobering reminder of the power of evil and the need for people to resist evil".

The couple walked across the railroad tracks that transported inmates to the gas chambers at the nearby Birkenau site.

"Mankind must come together to fight such dark impulses. The civilised world must never forget," Mr Bush said.
