Rents are to rise following a review by the Cadastre Committee
|
Tenants in Guernsey are set for a 7% increase in rent charges from July this year.
It follows a review of rent levels by the Cadastre Committee.
The Rent Control legislation is in place to determine and set a fair and reasonable level of rent on accommodation in the private sector.
The levels are determined purely on the size of a unit, and the facilities provided.
Financial commitments
The ability of a tenant or requirements of a landlord to meet financial commitments are not considered in the final figure.
Properties are included on the rent control register for five years.
Although the increase is above the level of the Retail Price Index, the committee says the cost of property maintenance has increased considerably in recent years.
It is striving to bridge the gap between those who have been on the register for a long time and more recent entries.
