Students helped to safety
Two students had to be helped to safety when a fire broke out in a Cambridge college early on Saturday morning.

Two fire crews went to Downing College shortly after 0500 BST where they found a serious fire in a student's bedroom.

Firefighters wearing breathing appartus searched the building after reports that there were people trapped inside.

Two students needed treatment after being overcome by smoke.

Neither is thought to be seriously hurt.

A fire service spokesman said blaze began after two candles were left burning close to bedding.

Senior fire officers said the consequences could have been much more serious had it not been for effective smoke alarms in the college.
