Teachers could face job cuts

At least one teacher is to be made redundant
Teachers in South Gloucestershire could face job cuts as some schools struggle with their budgets.

The National Union of Teachers says five schools have given notice of redundancies.

And they say more can be expected in the next few weeks.

South Gloucestershire Council says it is working with 25 schools in the county which are having financial difficulties.

But the council says it knows of only one teacher and one assistant whose only option is compulsory redundancy. It says it favours voluntary cuts.

"School do have a responsibility for their own budgets and have to balance their books," said a council spokeswoman.

"South Gloucestershire remains the second worst funded authority in the country for education."
