Ripper forensic expert dies

A leading forensic biologist who helped police crack the Yorkshire Ripper case has died at his North Yorkshire home.

Stuart Kind produced a paper describing the area in the north of England where the so-called Ripper lived.

He pinpointed the towns of Bingley and Shipley in West Yorkshire. Sutcliffe lived between the two.

Mr Kind had been suffering from cancer and leaves a widow, Evelyn and two sons and a daughter.


Students at Burnholme Community College in York are collecting goods which they will sell to raise money for Iraq.

They want toys, books, games and clothing.

The money will be sent to the UNICEF appeal for the people of Iraq.


Fight for line gathers steam

A survey of rail users is being carried out to assess if the Hull to York line should be reopened.

The Countryside Agency has published a report concluding the 34-mile line should be open again.

Campaigners say they want to see the route reopen via Market Weight on and Pocklington.

The survey will be completed by October.


Memorial garden to mark train crash

A man from York has designed a memorial garden for the site of the Potters Bar train crash.

Trevor Smith's design will be dedicated on the first anniversary of the crash on 10 May.

Seven people died in the accident.
