Beware of sites which charge
|
Do you want a new job but don't know where to look? The internet is a good place to start.
Millions of people in the UK use the web to search for vacancies, pick up advice, compare salaries, update skills or contact a recruiter.
Online recruiters are often extensions of existing recruitment companies and work in much the same way. Browse several sites, check if they specialise in your career area, register with them and measure the response you receive.
Find a site that is easy to use and is regularly refreshed. Some sites will offer extras like email alerts or the ability to post your online, these can be useful but check if you will be charged and make sure the site is relevant to you and your job.
Trawling the net
Alternatively you can go it alone. Search engines often provide very unfocused results, but most magazines and newspapers post job adverts on their websites and you can use mailing lists and newsgroups to target particular areas.

Research potential employers

If there is a specific employer you want to target, search their website for information and company background. Most company sites have their own recruitment pages to advertise available jobs.
Alternatively look for contact details of the human resources (HR) manager or department head and send them your CV directly.
If you already have an interview lined up don't forget that you can use the internet to look for facts and information to help you impress your potential employer.
Don't just look at the company's website, but check out rival firms, independent research and relevant market information.
