County tip angers residents
Rubbish tip
Residents say the smell and flies are unbearable
People living near a rubbish tip in Gloucester say they are angry that waste from Bristol is also being dumped there.

Hempsted landfill is a mile outside the city and handles waste from all over the county.

Bristol City Council say they have to send their rubbish to the site as they have no other disposal means and it is the nearest site.

Locals say the smell and the flies from the site are unbearable.

One resident, Joan Compton said: "You don't get any peace at all - as the lorries start at 7am every day. Even bank holidays and weekends."

Steve Gill, from Bristol council, told the BBC: "Here at Avonmouth we previously had our own incinerator plant but that had to close in 1996.

"Since then we have been sending our waste into landfill - partly into Gloucestershire and partly outside the region."
