A toddler who was left fighting for her life after a hit-and-run crash in which her six-year-old sister was killed has left hospital.

Kirsty Sawyer was just 18 months old when she was flung from the window of the family hatchback on New Year's Eve as Ian Carr ploughed into the car in a stolen vehicle.

Carr, who had 89 previous convictions, was jailed for nine-and-a-half years in January after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

Kirsty is now continuing on her road to recovery at the family home in Ashington, Northumberland, her grandmother, Linda Sawyer, said.

Return to hospital

The crash, which happened in Ashington, left Kirsty critically ill with serious head injuries.

She spent 12 weeks recovering in Newcastle General Hospital, with her parents scarcely leaving her bedside.

Kirsty is to undergo continuing physiotherapy and will return to hospital next month for treatment on her arm, which she was unable to move after the crash.

It emerged on Friday that the passengers who had been in the stolen Vauxhall Astra Carr had been driving will face no further action, following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Carr and his passengers had been returning from a night out when the crash happened.
