Man hurt in street attack named
Police in County Durham have named a man who was left critically ill following a disturbance at Langley Park near Durham.

Officers have launched an investigation and say they are disappointed by the public's response to appeal for information.

Barrie Lee, 59, had spent the evening with his wife Christine at Langley Park's Working Men's Club.

As they walked home, at 2330 GMT, they got into a heated argument with at least two other people on Rose Terrace.

Police bail

Mrs Lee ran home to get help from her oldest son.

When they arrived back at the scene they found her husband unconscious on the street.

He was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham and later transferred to Newcastle General Hospital, where he is being treated for serious head injuries and remains unconscious.

The police say a large number of people would have witnessed the assault, at closing time on Tuesday.

But, so far, they say they are disappointed with the public's response to appeals for help.

Two women - aged 43 and 19 - were arrested, and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
