The unit says a healthy diet can help reduce some forms of cancer
The Health Promotion Unit is asking its volunteers to help in the battle against Guernsey's second-biggest killer.

The unit is aiming to reduce the number of cancer cases by teaching its team of Live for Life tutors to increase islanders' awareness.

The new initiative will get under way next month.

About four out of every five cancer cases are thought to be preventable through early detection, or through changes to a healthier and more active lifestyle.

The initiative has been timed for April to coincide with National Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

The unit said this form of cancer was the most common among Guernsey men, and the second most common among island women.

The unit said simple steps, like eating a healthy diet, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, could play a big part in reducing the risk of bowel and other cancers.
