Police hurt as car hits tree
Two police officers were seriously hurt when their patrol car hit a tree as they responded to an emergency call in Surrey.

The accident happened at 1930 GMT on Thursday evening on the A287 as the pair travelled to attend a 999 call near Hindhead.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said the officers were heading for Tilford to attend a possible domestic violence incident involving children when the patrol car reached a bend, left the road and hit a tree.

The car driver, a 33-year-old married officer with two children, underwent lengthy surgery on Thursday night for serious injuries.

Missing girl

His 26-year-old passenger is described as being in a life-threatening condition.

Both men are in intensive care at Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley.

The Peugeot 406 patrol car was written off in the crash, but the tree was left standing.

Both officers, who have not been named, are members of the targeted response team at Guildford Police Station.

Witness appeal

They both had to be cut from the wreckage and were taken to hospital in separate ambulances.

A Surrey Police spokesman said before the accident they had been at an incident in Guildford where they had found a missing 12-year-old girl.

Crash investigators worked into the early hours of Friday morning to try to find out what happened.

Police are also appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward.
