Town launches street crime initiative
A new system to tackle street crime is being launched in Rotherham town centre.

Three help points have been set up which will provide a link to the control room that monitors CCTV cameras.

It means that, at the push of a button, crime victims can alert camera operators to track a thief or someone acting suspiciously.

The scheme is designed to help cut offences like handbag and mobile phone thefts.

But officials stress people using the help points will not be connected to a police officer.

And they are not an alternative to calling 999 if a serious crime has been committed.

Funding has come from the government after a successful bid from the Safer Rotherham Partnership.
