Police urge vigilance after burglaries
Police officers
Thieves have stolen mainly cash and jewellery
Police in Yeovil are urging householders to be on the alert after a number of burglaries in the town.

Officers have stepped up high-visibility patrols in the affected areas, but are asking townsfolk to take extra precautions.

They are also keen for more householders to join - or set up - Neighbourhood Watch schemes.

The majority of thefts have been of cash and jewellery.

Inspector Trevor Ashford of Yeovil police said: "Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase in domestic burglaries.

"We are asking people to be vigilant and call 999 if they see anyone behaving suspiciously.

"A number of the thefts have been through an open door, mainly in the afternoon and evening and often while someone is at home.

"Others have happened though a bogus caller conning their way into the house.

"Even while someone is at home we urge everyone to keep doors and windows secure, and never let anyone into the house unless they have seen identification."
